Alligator (Wall coatings)

ALLIGATOR FARBWERKE GmbH

After the systematic selection of suitable partners in China, FE established two Joint Ventures in Shanghai and Beijing-Langfang with ALLIGATOR FARBWERKE GmbH, a leading German manufacturer of wall coatings in May 1997. FE is involved in both Joint Ventures of ALLIGATOR as minor shareholder. With the assumption of operational tasks locally (among others financial control, communication and general problem-solving) FE contributes to the goal that any risks are recognized in time and that the capacity load from the China engagement for ALLIGATOR moves within justifiable limits.

As published in the attached press report, the two Joint Ventures have been profitable from the beginning and achieve regularly two digit increases in turnover and net yield. With an annual sales volume of more than 20,000 tons of water-solvent, environmental friendly coatings, ALLIGATOR nowadays belongs to the leading manufacturers of wall coatings in China. Since more than eleven years ALLIGATOR in Shanghai has been supplying the local plant of the largest global ceiling manufacturer Armstrong Industries with high-quality emulsion paints. The Chinese partner, Shanghai Shenzen Enterprise Co Ltd., is represented in approximately 30 cities of China with a dense sales network. Supported by modern showrooms at central locations the wall paints are sold to wholesalers and retailers, interior decoration companies, industrial customers, DIY markets (OBI, B&Q and Homemart among others) and construction companies in whole China. Thanks to the early market entry and continuous local market development, now Alligator belongs to the top 10 brands of the Chinese wall coating industry.

In 2003 and 2004, with technical support from ALLIGATOR FARBWERKE GmbH, the sales & marketing with Thermal Insulation Systems (TIS) in China was developed. TIS specialists of ALLIGATOR FARBWERKE then first advised the two Joint Ventures on the additional purchase and manufacturing of TIS components locally and later accomplished several training courses for selected sales partners in China. The WDVS training project was promoted by the public German Development and Investment Company DEG in the context of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) programs. With TIS the ALLIGATOR FARBWERKE takes into account the increasing need for energy-saving wall coverings, in particular in north China.

In 2006 a new ALLIGATOR plant in Beijing was opened in order to cover the growing north Chinese market more effectively. With an annual production capacity of 20,000 tons emulsion paints, dry mortars for TIS, tile adhesives and self-levelling cements are manufactured here.

In 2016 Caparol Group DAW, owner of Alligator, sold its shares in Alligator China. In 2018, after more than 20 years as a shareholder, FE also sold its shares.
